Flexible Instructional Days at GWCS

The Flexible Instructional Day (FID) Program is a tool available to public school entities, such as Green Woods Charter School, to be used as an alternate approach to delivering instruction if necessary. Circumstances that could prevent the delivery of instruction in its customary manner or location include a disease epidemic, a hazardous weather condition, the inoperability of school buses or other equipment necessary to the school’s operation, damage to a school building, or any other circumstance which prevents the delivery of instruction in its customary manner or location.

How will my family be notified if GWCS institutes a FID day?
Communication to parents and students will be sent through the RUVNA system and then posted on our website and social media page. Parents can expect to be updated by the end of the instituted FID if school will resume as normally scheduled or if an additional FID needs to be instituted the following school day.
 
Will my child need to utilize technology during the FID day?
Yes for grades 3-8. If the FID is instituted while students are still in school, technology will be provided to students to take home and utilize during the FID. In this scenario, students will be expected to complete all assignments asynchronously and return their devices to school on the next regularly scheduled school day.  If the FID is instituted when students are not in school and they are in need of technology, students will be asked to utilize a device like a personal tablet or cell phone to complete their work and complete their assignment asynchronously. No for grades K-2. Students will be provided with paper packets of work prior to FID to be completed and turned in on the next regularly scheduled school day.
 
What if my child does not have access to a device?
As an alternative method of delivering instruction, teachers may also assign a paper FID packet prior to the FID (packets may include a menu of review activities, a choice board, reading assignments, and/or paper pencil tasks prior to the instituted FID) in the event there is an issue with technology or access to the online materials. Any student who has opted to complete a paper FID packet, will also have access to their teacher’s Zoom phone number. Students may contact teachers over the phone if they need assistance. Students who opt to complete a paper FID packet will only be marked present if their families contact the school the day of the instituted FID and submit their FID packet to their teacher on the next regularly scheduled school day. 
 
How can I ensure my child is marked “Present” for the FID day?
To be marked Present for a Flexible Instruction Day (FID), two things must occur:

  1. Your child must log in to their homeroom teacher's 30-minute morning meeting. Teachers will take attendance during this meeting.
  2. A parent/guardian must submit attendance for the day.Completing both the student morning meeting and the parent attendance verification ensures your child is accurately marked present for the FID.
  3. Families with internet access should complete the Google Form shared by their child's homeroom teacher on the morning of the FID. The form must be submitted by 12:00 p.m.
  4. If you experience difficulty accessing the Google Form, you may report your child's attendance by emailing [email protected] before 12:00 p.m.
  5. Families without internet access should call the school and leave a voicemail to report their child's attendance by 12:00 p.m.
Completing both the student morning meeting and the parent attendance verification ensures your child is accurately marked present for the FID.
 
What will my K-2nd grade child be expected to do during a FID day if they have a device?
Families of students in grades K-2 who have access to technology and internet, will be expected to log on for a 30 minute morning meeting for attendance and to review the expectations for the day with their teachers.  Students will be given paper FID packets prior to and instituted FID. 
The work is to be completed at their own pace throughout the day, and students will also have access to their teachers via zoom, email, or phone throughout the FID during specified times.Students will be expected to complete all of their assignments as they would if it was a regular school day. K-2 students will submit their completed work packets to their teacher on the next regularly scheduled school day. Work submitted on the FID will count as attendance and participation for the day and reflect as such on the child’s trimester report cards. 


What will my 3rd-8th grade child be expected to do during a FID day if they have a device?
Students in grades 3-8will log on for a 30 minute morning meeting for attendance and to review the expectations for the day with their teachers.   Students who have access to technology and internet, will be expected to log in to Google Classroom to review daily assignments and recommended schedules for the day.  Students will also have access to their teachers via zoom, email, or phone throughout the FID during specified times.
Students will be expected to complete all of their assignments as they would if it was a regular school day. Students in grades 3-8 will submit their assignments via Google Classroom or Google Forms no later than 5pm of the instituted FID. Work submitted on the FID will count as attendance and participation for the day and reflect as such on the child’s trimester report cards. 
 
What if my child receives Special Education services?
Special education and regular education teachers will work together to design lessons that incorporate any modifications, specially designed instruction, and supplementary aids and services identified in a student’s individualized education plans (IEP). Special Education teachers will also be available via Zoom if any help is needed.  Any related services (PT, OT, Speech, Hearing Support, etc.) scheduled during the FID will be rescheduled in make-up sessions according to the frequency requirements of the students’ IEP.
