Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

Our school cares deeply about the safety and well-being of our students. We take many steps to ensure that our environment is one in which students thrive on many levels. For this reason, we are excited about our implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is one of the best known bullying prevention programs worldwide. Through rigorous studies, OBPP has been proven to prevent and reduce bullying in schools. In addition to bullying reduction and prevention, the program also works to improve relationships among students. This program is proven to have a significant impact on all students, not just those who may be bullied or who may bully others. Components of the program include staff training and follow up discussions, as well as regularly scheduled class meetings to discuss related topics and build community. As part of the program, students review the true definition of bullying, as described in OBPP, so they are better able to decipher the difference between conflict and real issues of bullying and respond appropriately:

"A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."

At Green Woods, we call the program the H.E.R.O. program (Help Everyone Respect Others). With our superhero theme, we focus primarily on the behaviors that we want to see at school such as kindness and inclusion. The H.E.R.O. theme emphasizes the fact that we all have attributes (superpowers) such as empathy, courage and strength, that we can rely on in the most challenging situations that affect ourselves and others. As part of our Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee’s effort to build school wide community, we have put “buddy classes” into place. Each class is paired up with another class and will engage in activities together throughout the year.

Here are our school’s HERO Responsibilities:

Do the right thing!

  • Take care of yourself!
  • Take care of others!
  • Take care of our community!
    • We will not bully others.
    • We will help students who are bullied.
    • We will include students who are left out.
    • If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
