Language Arts 5-6
We are excited to be implementing our new ELA curriculum called Journeys. Journeys is a comprehensive K-6 English language arts program. It provides an instructional system for reading both literature and informational texts, for acquiring foundational skills, and for developing mastery of speaking, listening and writing.

5th-grade language arts classes will also follow the reader's workshop model. Within a reader's workshop model, specific reading skills are introduced through a mini-lesson and practiced through independent and guided reading. This year, the 5th-grade teachers will be utilizing a variety of reading materials and genres. We will be taking a closer look at historical fiction, biographies, novels, short stories, magazine and newspaper articles, and plays.

During writer's workshop, students will have the opportunity to navigate through the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, publishing) to compose a variety of genres including narratives, informational, expository, and persuasive writing. Students should have an opportunity to write every day in order to support writing skills and gain a general interest in the art. Grammar, reading comprehension strategies, and vocabulary will be interwoven throughout the curriculum were relevant and will also be taught in isolation. Many of our reading and writing selections will be integrated with the social studies and science curriculum and will provide us with relevant background knowledge about what we are studying in those subjects.

Reading and Writing Activities:
  • Literature Circle Discussions
  • Shared/Guided/Independent Reading
  • Journaling/Reflecting
  • Independent and Partner Reading

Writing 7-8
We are excited to be implementing our new ELA curriculum called Collections. Collections is a comprehensive Middle School English language arts program. It provides an instructional system for reading both literature and informational texts, for acquiring foundational skills, and for developing mastery of speaking, listening and writing.
The middle school writing curriculum focuses on creating student authors that are able to proficiently write for different purposes in multiple genres. Grammar will be studied and literary devices will be explored to fortify the students' writing abilities. Using the writing process, the students will hone their writing skills to perfection. Specific genres of writing that will be studied include persuasive, expository, narrative, research, and literature response. The students' writing skills will also be utilized for their work in the new Media Studies program.

Reading 7-8
The 7th to 8th-grade language arts classes will mimic a reader's workshop model. Through modeling and mini-lessons students will have a specific focus which will be strengthened and guided through independent, whole group, and small group instruction. We will be utilizing a variety of reading materials and genres. We will be taking a close look at biographies, novels, short stories, magazine and newspaper articles, and plays. Reading comprehension strategies and vocabulary will be interwoven throughout the curriculum where relevant and will also be taught in isolation. Many of our reading selections will be integrated with the social studies, writing, media studies, and science curriculum and will provide us with relevant background knowledge about what we are studying in those subjects.

Examples of reading selections seen throughout the school year:
