GWCS Announcement: Welcome CEO Debi Durso

Dear Green Woods Parents,

We are thrilled to announce that Debi Durso will be the new CEO of Green Woods Charter School. The board approved her contract, beginning July 1, 2019, at last night’s board meeting.

The CEO search process was led by Green Woods’ HR Consultant, Molly Farley. The committee consisted of members of the administration team, teachers, parents, and board members. The committee interviewed several highly qualified and vetted candidates. Two candidates were asked to return for additional interviews and demonstrations before a final decision was reached.

We are confident that Debi Durso is the right person to lead Green Woods into a bright and successful future. Her passion, combined with her extensive background and experience in education, make her the perfect leader to help our school reach its true potential and build on its mission of providing children in grades K through 8 with the opportunity to be active, knowledgeable, and conscientious young investigators by fostering a keen understanding of the interrelatedness and interdependence of our local and global existence; creating active young stewards of the natural world.

Debi has decades of instructional and leadership experience. She has been a Teacher, a Vice Principal, Principal and has most recently served as Regional Schools Officer for Mastery Charter Schools. She has run professional development for teachers around classroom management and for senior team members on leadership development. She is a classically trained English teacher who spent several years teaching high school English in the School District of Philadelphia and middle school English at Mastery Charter Schools. She earned her undergraduate degree in English from Shippensburg University, followed by her MA in Student Personnel Services and Counseling in Higher Education from Widener University and her MS.ED in Educational Leadership from Chestnut Hill College. Debi and her husband, Tim, have four children and she’s lived in Philadelphia her entire life.

During her 14 years at Mastery, Debi worked with and developed numerous educators who now serve as elementary school principals and senior leaders, both at Mastery and in other school districts in the Philadelphia area. As the College Advisor at Thomas High School, Mastery's first turnaround school, she helped guide seniors through the college application process and worked with the first students to be accepted into Ivy League Schools. As the founding principal in 2010 for Mastery at Harrity Elementary, she led the largest elementary school turnaround. Originally planned for 600 students, they enrolled 850 students from grades K-8. At the end of the year, they had double-digit gains in both math (+18 points) and reading (+12).

Debi is also deeply invested in and committed to Green Woods. In addition to having children attend the school, Debi served on the board for two years and was chair of the board for part of her term. During her time on the board, she oversaw the financial health of the school, the creation, and execution of the school’s first teacher salary scale, the adoption of the math and ELA curriculums, among other projects and initiatives.

Debi is excited to join the Green Woods leadership team and get to work with our wonderful students and our great community of staff, teachers, parents and external partners.

There will be a Meet and Greet at the school on Thursday, April 11th at 7 p.m. for parents and community members. We hope to see you there.

Please join us in welcoming Debi Durso to Green Woods as our new CEO!
