Green Woods Board of Trustees is the governing body for Green Woods Charter School. State law charges the Board of Trustees with both the authority and the responsibility to see that Green Woods is in compliance in all legal and fiduciary aspects relating to the oversight of Green Woods. More than just a governing body, however, the Board of Trustees helps create a vision for the future of Green Woods and then directs that vision. As with Green Woods environmental curriculum, Green Woods Board is constantly evolving, refusing to remain stagnant, in order to better serve the needs of our students. The Board is charged by the State of Pennsylvania to support the creation of a unique, safe, and successful learning environment for our children and they take this responsibility very seriously.
But who owns a charter school? According to expert Brian Carpenter, this is really quite simple when you think about it. “Because charter schools, or as I prefer to call them for clarity, chartered schools, are created by statute, they are owned by the public. Sure, stakeholders (including management and founders) are part of that group. But don’t be confused on this point. The owners of a charter school are far more numerous than the stakeholders. This distinction becomes critical every time the board has to consider a decision in which the stakeholders (or some subset thereof) want one thing, and the owners want another. This may create tension at times, but the role of the board is to govern on behalf of the owners.” Read More
Made up of a diversity of knowledge and expertise, the Board recognizes and appreciates that there are 200 children and their families that depend upon them to work in collaboration to meet our students’ social, emotional and academic needs. The Board understands and appreciates that student achievement must be in the forefront of all decision making and that the hard work of teachers must be valued. Exceptional educators are the backbone of Green Woods success and working side-by-side with our parents and school community there is nothing that will stop us from remaining an exemplary school for environmental education in our state.
Our standardized test scores prove that students can learn differently and still learn well. We have made AYP each year, our TerraNova and PSSA scores exceed the state average. Our goal for the coming year is to create and implement a strategic plan for the growth of our fiscal status, as we also plan for our future facility needs.
As a direct result of the hard work of our teaching staff, and the resulting academic success, Green Woods was officially re-chartered by the School District of Philadelphia. The Board of Trustees looks forward to many more years of serving our community by ensuring that we are doing all that we can to see that our children are receiving high quality instruction within our unique learning environment. We welcome your ideas and appreciate your support of our efforts as we enter a whole new era for Green Woods Charter School. |
